Nutrition Month 2021: Good for you! Dietitians help you find your healthy.

March is National Nutrition Month. Healthy eating looks different for everyone. This year we'll explore how your culture, food traditions, personal circumstances & nutritional needs all contribute to what healthy looks like for you.

To kick off Nutrition Month I would like to share with you my love for being a Registered Dietitian. For the past 19 years practicing as a Registered Dietitian I have had the privilege of working in a variety of areas including health promotion, chronic disease management, media, acute care nutrition services and most recently private practice. I could confidently write a book on the experiences both rewarding and not so rewarding, people I have met along my journey, slip ups and successes as well as some downright funny stories. As I reflect on my career this year during Nutrition Month I realize that I still love being a Registered Dietitian. Nutrition is an evolving science. The education that I received in University seems so basic, general and miniscule to the depth and breathe of knowledge that I have acquired in years of practice. I love to teach. Teaching and mentoring new students coming out of university and into internship has been some of my proudest moments. Nothing can ever take the place of practical work in an environment that these students may be working in some day. I thoroughly enjoy sharing tips, resources, knowledge and expertise that you cannot acquire in a lecture theatre or lab.

Most recently I have branched off into private practice. This has been a huge learning curve to say the least. Starting a business from the ground up during a world-wide pandemic and with a newborn seemed to sound appealing to me. My knowledge in business, social media, marketing and virtual care has increased ten-fold. I have delightfully found my new passion. My private practice focuses on three key areas; delivering Nutrition Education in person and virtually to schools, sports teams, community groups and individuals, helping busy families meal plan to optimize their health and wellness with busy lives as well as Nutrigenomics (genetic testing to personalize nutrition and lifestyle recommendation based on your genetic potential). One thing that I do know for certain, lifelong learning is not even optional. The diversity, experiences, offerings for my clients and people I have yet to meet continues. Being a dietitian rocks! Just like the 2021 Nutrition Month theme states Dietitians Help You Find Your Healthy. Happy and Healthy Eating to all!
